About the text:

The primary textbook for this course is the meta-matn Tanwir al-Absar by Imam Tumurtashi.

This text is foundational to the later Hanafi tradition, serving as the basis for two of its most central works:

The first is Imam Haskafi’s al-Durr al-Mukhtar, a key commentary that organizes and explains the legal details of the Hanafi school. This work has been a primary reference for jurists and students seeking a clear and systematic presentation of Hanafi rulings.

The second is Ibn Abidin’s Radd al-Muhtar—widely recognized as the definitive reference for the fatwa positions (mu‘tamad) of the Hanafi school.

Ibn Abidin builds on Tanwir al-Absar to clarify and codify the relied-upon positions of the school, making it indispensable for issuing legal verdicts.

Through the study of Tanwir al-Absar, students will develop a solid grounding in the rulings and principles that underpin these later works.

This will equip them with the skills needed to engage critically and effectively with the broader tradition of Hanafi jurisprudence.

About the Author:

Muhammad ibn ‘Abdullah al-Tumurtashi al-Ghazzi was born in Gaza, Palestine, in 939 AH. He was one of the leading jurists of the Hanafi school in his time, known for his significant contributions to Islamic law (fiqh).

Among his most important works is Tanwir al-Absar, a foundational meta-matn in Hanafi jurisprudence. This text became a cornerstone for later commentaries and continues to be widely studied.

Imam Tumurtashi also authored a two-volume commentary on this text, Minah al-Ghaffar, which provides a comprehensive explanation of its legal rulings and principles.

His stature in the Hanafi tradition earned him the title Shaykh al-Islam, reflecting the immense respect and recognition he received for his scholarship and contributions to the school.

Imam Tumurtashi passed away in Gaza in or after 1004 AH. His legacy endures in the continued study and application of his works, which remain essential references for students and scholars of Hanafi fiqh.
