This course thoroughly studies one of the most studied manuals on the Principles of Hadith and its nomenclature written by one of the most influential Hadith scholars of all time - Nukhbat al-Fikar by Imam Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani (Allah have mercy on him) (852 AH). The text is usually studied after the completion of al-Bayquniyyh, and it is considered the gateway for studying the upper-intermediate and advanced textbooks of Hadith sciences. It is also considered the key to understanding the methodology of the scholars of Hadith from the 8th and 9th centuries onward because most of the scholars of Hadith after Ibn Hajar followed his systematic approach.

Imam Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani is a towering figure in Islamic scholarship, particularly within the 8th and 9th centuries. His early years were marked by adversity; born in Cairo, Egypt, in 773 AH, he faced the loss of both parents by the tender age of four. Entrusted to the care of the esteemed merchant Zaky al-Din al-Kharoubi, Ibn Hajar’s resilience and thirst for knowledge were evident early on. By nine, he had not only memorized the Quran but also a multitude of foundational texts across the Sacred Sciences, a testament to his prodigious intellect and dedication.

His scholarly journey was enriched by the tutelage of luminaries in the Shafi’i School and masters of Hadith sciences, including figures like Bulqini, Iraqi, and Ibn al-Mullaqin.

Further broadening his horizons, Ibn Hajar embarked on studies across Yemen, Hijaz, and Sham, engaging with scholars who would shape his profound understanding of Islamic jurisprudence and Hadith.

Ibn Hajar’s literary legacy encompasses over 150 works, predominantly in Hadith sciences, which have become foundational texts and critical references.
